New generation Smart ForTwo coming for 2011

smart, a division of German automaker Daimler-Benz, will introduce its new generation fortwo models this fall.  The company claims the new models have a fresh interior look and upgraded exterior along with more environmentally friendly engines.

smart brand Managing Director Marc Langenbrinck describes the new generation fortwo as "perfect for our times," calling it attractive and stylish with "visible attention to detail, even more comfort and enhanced functionality."

Fresh ideas include a wider range of available colors.  smart is adding light green with a trendy matt finish to the list of choices.  Light blue metallic will also replace the previous blue metallic choice.  For customers who like open air driving and want some variety, smart will offer red and blue as choices for the soft cabrio top previously only available in black.

The new smart fortwo will offer a redesigned interior with a full fabric-covered instrument panel with new styling and new designs. New cutting edged communication and entertainment options include a multimedia system with large display, intergrated navigation system, Bluetooth hands-free system, USB and auxiliary port for external devices and an iPod interface.

Under the small hood, new generation engines will "work more efficiently than ever before," according to smart.  A CDI turbodiesel joins the lineup along with improved  3-cylinder gasoline engines. Current fortwo models achieve EPA estimates of 33 MPG in the city.  Based on figures from smart, the new models will produce significantly better fuel economy.

While many may look at the smart fortwo and think it can't possibly be safe because of its tiny size, the current generation model achieved top ratings for front and side crash protection from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

smart has not announced pricing for the next generation fortwo.  Current models range in starting price from $11,990 to $20,990.
