Test Drive: 2010 Volkswagen GTI

This week's Test Drive takes place in the 2010 Volkswagen GTI.  Small. Sporty. Stimulating.

My first impressions are very good. I'm finding this car to be quite comfortable. The leather bucket seats are great, though I don't understand why driver's seat has a power recline feature, but adjusts forward and backward manually.

I really dig the race car inspired steering wheel.

This GTI test model is fairly well equipped.  Features include DVD navigation, Sirius satellite radio and a premium sound system which includes an iPod connection.  Bluetooth connectivity is also included for both cell phones and audio devices.  There is no automatic lights feature.

Under the hood is VW's 2.0L, turbocharged four-cylinder engine.  It puts out 200hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration is peppy, once you get past the turbo lag, which, unfortunately, is quite noticeable. There also is an aggressive exhaust note. Volkswagen recommends premium gasoline for peak performance.

The GTI handles well on the road.  The optional 18-inch wheels are wrapped in road-hugging rubber and amazingly, you don't feel every harsh bump as you peel down the pavement.

Lift the hatchback and you find a good amount of cargo space which expands if you put the rear seats down.

Overall, the GTI is pretty impressive. Nice, sporty, German engineering for about $32,000.  Despite the lack of all-wheel drive and an engine rated at 100 fewer horses, I would buy the GTI over the more expensive Subaru WRX.  In everyday driving, you get basically the same feel at a much better price.
